On June 19, Heart of Maine Resource Center welcomed families from across the region to the Dexter Public Beach for our 2nd Annual Dexter Family Fun Day. What began as a beautiful sunny morning quickly transformed into a day of changing skies, but not even the clouds could keep people away from a day filled with fun, laughter, and community connection.

The day started early as Tooney Looney Rentals arrived at 7:00 a.m. to deliver the attractions that would soon become the center of excitement for hundreds of children and families. Bounce castles, giant slides, a climbing wall, and a dunk tank transformed the beach into a hub of activity. By 9:00 a.m., volunteers began arriving to help set up for the event, preparing games, activity stations, and welcoming spaces for families to enjoy throughout the day.

As the clouds rolled in, the energy only continued to grow. Families poured into the beach area, eager to enjoy the free activities available throughout the event. Children bounced, climbed, played games, and explored all that the day had to offer while parents and neighbors gathered, visited, and enjoyed time together.

One of the highlights of the day was our Board Member Challenge. In the weeks leading up to the event, community members cast votes with their donations to decide whether Board President Andrew Bermudez or board member Trampas King would spend the day in the dunk tank. When the votes were counted, Andrew earned the honor of taking the plunge. Throughout the event, community members lined up for the chance to test their throwing skills and send him splashing into the water. Children and adults alike enjoyed the friendly competition, and Andrew was a great sport as he took dunk after dunk—all in support of Heart of Maine Resource Center's mission.

The event featured something for everyone. The Dexter High School Key Club hosted a friendship bracelet-making station where children could create colorful keepsakes to take home. Dexter Hannaford generously provided face painting, helping transform children into superheroes, animals, and imaginative characters. The Dexter Fire Department and Dexter Police Department added an exciting touch-a-truck experience, allowing children and families to explore emergency vehicles up close and meet the people who serve our community every day.

Visitors also enjoyed delicious dough boys provided by Kiwanis, while Lakeshore treated attendees with 200 coupons for free soft serve ice cream. Lawn games scattered throughout the beach gave families additional opportunities to play together and enjoy the day.

Most importantly, the event was completely free for the community. Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors—Millworks Custom Apparel, Maine Highlands Federal Credit Union, Bangor Savings Bank, RE/MAX Infinity, and the Swain Family—we were able to create a welcoming event where families could come together without worrying about the cost.

We estimate that more than 500 people attended this year's Family Fun Day. While the event did raise funds to support Heart of Maine Resource Center's programs, the greatest success was something much harder to measure. The day provided an opportunity for neighbors to connect, for families to spend quality time together, and for community organizations to come together around a shared goal of strengthening our community.

Events like Family Fun Day also help raise awareness about the work of Heart of Maine Resource Center and our mission to connect neighbors with the resources they need to thrive. Every conversation, new connection, and smiling face helped further that mission.

We are incredibly grateful to the many volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to making this event possible. From setup and activities to cleanup and everything in between, their commitment helped create a memorable experience for hundreds of families. We are also thankful to our sponsors and community partners whose generosity made it possible to offer every activity free of charge.

Although the sun may have disappeared throughout the day, the enthusiasm of our community certainly did not. The laughter, smiles, and connections made throughout the day reminded us of the power of bringing people together. We are already looking forward to making Dexter Family Fun Day an annual tradition and creating even more opportunities for families, neighbors, and friends to connect in the years ahead.

Thank you to everyone who attended, volunteered, sponsored, donated, and supported this event. We can't wait to see you again next year!
